Genesis 1: 3-5 Let there be light . . .and there was
“Darkness is
only driven out with light, not more darkness.” Martin Luther King, Jr “Light”
a really interesting word in English. It refers to weight as in “that
feather is light!” It refers to illumination as “the light of day reached my eyes!” It can refer to an object
as in “pass that light over here, that flashlight on the bench”. It can even refer to an action
“light that fire”.
So what is this verse in Genesis referring to. . .
And
God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the
first day.
I guess that we have to see what the original word on the original language was trying
to say. It also had meanings, and this are given as the following;
Light אֹ֑ור pronounced
’owr (ore) Means
illumination or (concrete) luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.) -- bright, clear, + day, light
(-ning), morning, sun.
Now I will start to go into this discussion. If you need background I suggest
you may need to read my blog on Genesis 1:1-2 where I explain a little about the creation of the heavens and earth <Click here to see this blog>
So, perhaps our universe starts with a big bang.
We have three pieces of evidence for that big bang (God speaking).
Firstly
by looking at light emitted by distant galaxies, our scientists have found they are rapidly moving away(expansion is taking
place).
Secondly the measurement of most of the matter in the universe shows the basic building element of the universe are those predicted as being necessary by the big bang (74 percent hydrogen
and 26 percent helium by mass showing that our universe probably began hot and very dense state to cool quickly). Lastly there is that photograph of the microwaves of the universe
which is found in all directions. This is the remainder of the big bang radiation. This was the final proof and a spacecraft
had to be specially built to photograph this incredible background radiation. (It was predicted by scientists before it was
photographed).
So the heavens were created (I say by God’s Word and you can
disagree, but it’s sure interesting the bible is accurate in describing the event).
Then the
earth get’s formed in the middle of a nebula.
At this same time we get told by science that
in the middle of this spinning giant molecular dust cloud, one place developed slightly higher gravity due to the density
of the material. This cause more stuff to start slowly flowing into this center of density causing it to get
more dense.
Since the region was mostly hydrogen and helium with other dust in lesser amounts, these were
sucked into this gravity area and since it all this stuff gets real heavy after a while it packs real tight and warms
up.
Now the complicated part…science says energy must be conserved and since these pieces of dust
and gas were loosing momentum energy, as they pelted inwards, the temperature was going up all the time as this energy was
converted into heat by friction.
(Things banging into other things produce heat if enough of them collide!)
After a few million years (about 50 million) the temperature and pressure from all
this stuff resulted in hydrogen starting to fuse. That was atomic fusion
that started and the huge mass of material started lighting up!
Birth of our sun!
Spectacular!
A true moment that only God would appreciate
since none of us were around to applause!
The energy that now flowed out of the sun counteracted the
inflow of material and started to blow stuff away little by little.
Meanwhile out there in the dust cloud the prototype earth had also formed. Between these two creations was dust, gases and perhaps a bit of water.
On earth if anyone was
there (they were not) they would not have seen the sun yet. There would
have been a smudgy light area in a weird dark sky, but light was there. Probably the earth was spinning a whole lot faster
than today as well, (we know it has slowed down a lot since then).
So this general view of
light God decided would be given that word “day” and the general
description of darkness was given the name “night”
Perhaps I am getting ahead of myself, because
before he stated this, God first separated “light” from “darkness”. That word for separated is וַיַּבְדֵּ֣לand this means “divided”
or “putting separation between”.
So, God separated “light” from “darkness”. He separated
everything light, happy and positive from that which was הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ pronounced kho-shek, meaning the dark; hence (literally)
darkness; figuratively, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness -- dark(-ness), night, obscurity.
The bible explains to us later that Satan was given control of the earth when he was thrown from heaven.
Could this have been the point that evil was placed into a different area for the first time? Separation
of light and darkness? An interesting question worth of some investigation some other day!
Okay, getting
back to this first day. The word for day is “ywm” or “yom”, and I have blogged extensively explaining
this could mean period as easily as it means day.
In the Hebrew the description of this part
of the verse goes he called the darkness night לָ֑יְלָה pronounced la ‘hil which is interesting
in that it refers to a “twist (away of the light)". It means also a turning away of adversity or change of a season.
English has one word night,
the Hebrew is less well constrained and if we admit we don’t really understand the nuances of the ancient language as
used when it was written down, it brings in interesting considerations around that primal
division between God’s good and Satan’s evil.
The evil perhaps being a turning away
from good, a night!
Fascinating considerations with perhaps much more depth than that of a simple reading of text! Of
course, you make up your mind on this, but at least let’s enjoy thinking it through!
Then
we have that dusk and dawn of that first day. At some point as light increases a point is reached that God considers the end of this first period.
There is an evening and morning and we move to a new period of creation. Notice there is no statement that there was
only one evening! One of the evenings could also be an interpretation here. (Not saying it is…just giving options J )
Day one is over!
Now, for those that think I have destroyed the true reading of the scripture let me say this. I have not!
God can equally as easily have done all this in one day!
However, in my mind God is not a confidence trickster!
Placed a huge amount of evidence showing supporting sciences depiction of creation by logical, consistent, known
facts, only to lead us to wrong conclusions is not my experience of the living God. Truth and honesty is in his nature. That’s
why I don’t disregard science and my Christian brothers and sisters who work in this area. They tell me it is accurately
depicted. It also, as you can see, ties in fully with God’s word.
My prayer
is this…that we would have the Christian love for each other that we would not call another a liar unless we have proof.
Since nobody was there we can experiment and reproduce these situations and can only hypothesis (either
on a 4.5billion year earth or a 24hour created perhaps 6000 year earth) we should not let this stop us from going out today
and doing something creative, doing things the way God designed us to live. Doing something to build others up! Doing something
that allows God’s Holy Spirit to continue the creative forces started at these early times.
Have a great
day!

Genesis 1:1-2 God created the heavens and the earth Horsehead nebula - Nasa "Be
on guard against giving interpretations of Scripture that are farfetched or opposed to science, and so exposing the Word of God to the ridicule of unbelievers." St Augustine
Who created? God!
What was created?
The Heavens and the Earth
What is the context
of these words?
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Explain how the earth was formless and empty! [Doesn’t
compute?]
If we think the fact that it says the earth was formless and empty is
weird, then you need to read further. It’s plain common sense once it is explained!
But let’s discuss God’s creation of the heavens, the first thing mentioned
in the bible as being created. In the 17th and 18th century everyone, including that great scientist Newton
agreed that space was infinite and timeless. It had never been created and that was common sense since there was
nothing from which it could have come.
Then along came that trouble maker Einstein, a jew, who upset
everyone and showed together with others that our universe had a beginning.
This
was proved using general relativity.
General relativity was itself proved after the launch of the Cassini
space probe in 1997 as radio waves from the Earth to the probe were distorted by the warp of space time. (Fancy stuff
eh?)
Then another probe photographed the original background of microwave
radiation that is the residual of the big bang.
Now I know most of this is mumbo jumbo to
us average Joe’s, but lets understand that scientists, Christian and non-Christian world wide have checked
this out and agree it is good evidence! There was a big bang!
Out of nothing, our universe was created! There was a very big bang as God spoke the
heavens into existence! Everything we know comes from that event. Ourselves included since our bodies are made of molecules
and atoms, and those were not there before, molecules and atoms came into being through that event.
(Even if
God created Adam and Eve later, they were made of dust that was from the big bang)
So God created the heavens!
Science cannot say this since it can only say the heavens
came into being. Before that is God, but since science is experiential (you need experiments to prove things) and God wants
each man to have faith, that same God makes sure that probability of proving his existence is not conclusive. That’s
how we get free-will J.
Okay so what about creating this earth? That came a lot later. Science
indicates the universe is 13,4billion (take or give a bit) years old.
Then around 4,5 billion years (again
take or give a bit), out of a huge interstellar hydrogen, dust, ice and water cloud called a nebula we get
the original earth, according to science. So let’s ask the question of what a nebula is.
The word
nebula is Latin for “cloud”. Are cloud’s formless and empty?
Pretty
much! We cannot grab them, or draw around their edges. The have no fixed form.
Yet they do exist!
We can see them can’t we? We distinguish them as different from the surroundings don’t we?
Similar
with the nebula! These are interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen gas, helium gas and other ionized gases.
These
nebula are considered the birth material of planets like our Earth. At the start, something disturbs the cloud that
starts to clump together and due to gravity start to spin. Maybe some type of shockwave (did God speak again).
The dust
that forms clouds of dust, gases, and moisture then spins into a fattened disk shape.
The middle becomes
a central sun that comes together by gravity in the center of the dust cloud. It is initially hidden from view, but as time
goes on starts becoming visible through the dust by blowing away the dust due to its solar radiation.
The
dust clumps together randomly but as it gathers more and more, a planet grows into being. When it gets big enough,
gravity pulls it into a spherical shape.
So, that original cloud is basically empty.
We would call it part of the vacuum of space! Lots of emptiness! It also doesn’t really have edges, or a form. Like
a fog bank doesn’t have a form. It is sort of there! Hard to say where the edges are right?
A good simple
description for simpler man to remember “formless and empty”
Then
the bible says “darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
I
guess that the outer region of this cloud was as dark as the blackness of space at that time. That’s dark!
Then, inside this cloud is moisture, our seas came from that cloud and they have a lot of moisture
right? So when it says God’s spirit moved over the surface of the deep, it is real accurate!
I
find it interesting that only since Einstein would people believe what is described here with any confidence.
God had it written down over 3000years ago, so that today we have the choice to move forward in
science that he created, and yet fully love and believe him. He made provision for our belief before mankind knew they needed
it.
That’s an amazing God! One that tells me he is within me and guides me today.
It’s got to be a good day now, right?

Christian creation: Who was Genesis written to anyhow?
"There are a terrible lot of lies going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true.”
Winston Churchill Escaped
Slaves! That’s who Genesis was written to!
We can hardly understand that word “slave” in the western
world. We have freedom and choice, two things no slave has!
Can we even imagine what it’s like to
be forced to obey another person or suffer horrible consequences?
As
a slave our owners could ask us to do anything!
If they
said go worship that god or idol, we would do it or die! If they said kill that child, we would have a similar decision! If
they said dig up that field with your hands or make mud bricks, again there is no option but to obey.
Sometimes
slave owners are apparently nice, they say “run my business”,
in this case we as slaves would be so appreciative of not having to do the other things, we would do anything for that
owner. Either obey or they may sell us to another nastier person! They could sell our bodies into sexual perversions so they
could make money out of it, again, as a slave we have one option, do it or die!
Slaves very quickly
become compliant and after a few generations obey without any resistance,
simply because that’s the best way to survive.
The Israelites were in Egypt for 400years. We know this because the bible says
in Genesis 15:13 (NIRV)
Then the Lord said to him, "You can be sure
of what I am about to tell you. Your children who live after you will be strangers in a country that does not belong to them.
They will become slaves. They will be treated badly for 400 years.
Most of this time they were slaves!
For generation upon generation they served without a say in their lives.
Then Moses, a slave
child finds himself brought up in the Egyptian court as an adopted prince!
The Egyptians
did that to subject nations princes and so Moses probably had company of others in similar predicaments.
Often if Egyptians fought and won a war, they took children from the leaders of
that country and trained them in their courts.
Having these “princes” had a few advantages. The
parents, if alive, would obey their Egyptian overlords in case their child got hurt (and these kids would have been seriously
hurt if the parents didn’t) so the captive country remained under Egyptian control in an almost “voluntary”
manner. Secondly once these children, who never knew their true parents, grew up, the Egyptians could send
them back to run the country, again ensuring Egyptian control.
The Egyptians were smart people!
So, Moses then has issues with the Pharaoh (probably hated by him since they grew up together and he was not a real Egyptian and the Pharaohs had trouble with
a Semitic people called the Hyksos before).
Then he kills an Egyptian and runs from the country. (Why? A prince could kill
anyone and get away with it! Perhaps his “brother” Pharaoh wanted an excuse to kill him?) Moses
runs away and waits! Finally that Pharaoh dies. See Exodus 2:23 After a long
time, the king of Egypt died. The people of Israel groaned because they were slaves. They also cried out to God. Their cry
for help went up to him.
Then Moses comes back to persuade the new Pharaoh to let the
slave people go!
Not an easy task! Firstly they didn’t
want to go and secondly the Egyptians wanted their slaves.
To accomplish this event, God sends
out plagues to make life a misery for the Egyptians, and by implication for the slaves as well!
Ten plagues, each getting nastier and nastier all the time. All ten based on Egyptian God’s
so that the Egyptians would think their God’s were real angry with them! If you want to find out about this read from
Exodus 7 onwards where this is explained in our sacred book, the bible.
Finally,
they are allowed to go and with the Egyptian encouraging them to leave, this bunch of slaves “escape” Egypt.
Now you would think they were glad to go, but most of them were probably only following orders
of their Egyptian masters who wanted them gone!
Then, as they
go, they get a bit of courage and look forward to the freedom. They follow the only guy who really has a vision and
mind of his own, Moses.
Then, Moses under God’s guidance takes them into the desert and the various things that happen fill parts of various books of the bible, but when there, they wanted to go back to Egyptian religious practices.
It
was around that time that Moses wrote the book of Genesis. So Moses was writing it to a bunch of escaped slaves. (we are not sure it was actually Moses, but are sure it was written around that time)
These Israelite guys and girls would have had plenty of experience of Egyptian religions and so Moses needed to show them that the true God didn’t do what the Egyptian God’s
did.
Few people consider this but Genesis was NOT written to explain how the earth was established
according to science, because science didn’t exist! Genesis was NOT even written to prove God existed,
everyone at that time took this as fact!
Genesis was written to a bunch of escaped slaves to show them the
true God and not the Egyptian God’s was the creator!
That is why every DAY in genesis refutes
an Egyptian religious belief in some way.
Did you know that?
Maybe I will explain how over a few blogs.
Meanwhile, let’s give thanks that God allows us to live in freedom. That we have an opportunity to
investigate and discover the truths of God. That nobody forces us to do things we don’t want to do.
That’s
the privilege God has given Christians living in north America (and some other parts of this world). It’s not the case
for everyone on our Earth. Let’s remember those today who are enslaved economically, politically, and socially. Let’s
pray for their exodus from their bondage. Let’s pray God will create new lives for them in his power.
Everyone can escape their circumstances by allowing Holy Spirit to empower their lives no matter where or how they live.
Our loving God understands this! We need to pray that people in
this situation get given that chance, right?

Let’s rip the coverings from out minds! “Life is the first gift, love is the second, and understanding the third” Marge Piercy
Ever seen a child given a well wrapped gift for their birthday by
their father when their expectation is high and they really want to see what is inside?
It
has been a while since their last birthday and that old gift was good but the excitement in it has waned and now a new gift
is about to be experienced!
Gift wrapping is ripped off so fast and torn
into so many pieces, it’s as if a tornado has blown through a small part of that room decimating that paper wrapper,
isn’t it?
Children aren't careful take a wrapping off of a gift
because they really want to see, experience and touch what is inside! They
know their father and so anticipate it’s going to be something wonderful! Both the father and child
smile broadly once the child holds the gift and appreciation is experienced by all around them.
I think
that’s what Paul was referring to in 2 Corinthians 3 (NIRV) in the Holy writings when he said. . .
The
glory of the old covenant is nothing compared with the far greater glory of the new. The glory of the old is fading away.
How much greater is the glory of the new! It will last forever.
Since we have that kind of hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses. He used to cover his face with a veil. That
was to keep the people of Israel from looking at his face while the brightness was fading away. But their minds were made stubborn. To this very day, the same veil remains when the old covenant
is read. The veil has not been removed. Only faith in Christ can take it away. To this very day, when the Law of Moses is
read, a veil covers the minds of those who hear it. But
when anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Holy Spirit. And where the Spirit of the
Lord is, freedom is also there. Our faces are
not covered with a veil. We all display the Lord's glory. We are being changed to become more like him so that we have more
and more glory. And the glory comes from the Lord, who is the Holy Spirit.
The
Old Covenants many of us live under now days may be a rule based religion! So many people
think rules and Christianity are so tightly linked the one is the other!
It's not true! True Christians
that know God, also know the thinking that we are part of a rule based religion is silly! We don’t follow rules!
In fact, in my case, I am a bit of a rebel when it comes to following rules!
Instead as Christians
we respond in love to a wonderful God. Like a child following the advice of a loving father! We know God is giving us guidelines
to keep us safe. So, we want to follow the guidelines.
They are guidelines! Every person on earth can decide
to follow them or not!
Let’s consider the simplicity of the 10 major Old Testament
guidelines given to us! The first four are about God. . .
-Love God (that’s easy for some of us),
-Don’t favour other things as more important than God (if we really love him we don’t do this
anyhow),
-Don’t abuse his name (we wouldn’t abuse our Father's name since he’s a great guy!),
-Take time once a week to relax, enjoy life and consider how wonderful the world is that he has provided
for us, to thank him for all he had done (Wow! we need that day off! It’s great to appreciate the creation of Father
God, isn’t it?).
So those are God guidelines. All about how we deal with him, but what
about how to deal with others?
-God says to respect our parents! (I guess every parent wants that! Once we become
parents we will want it too! This makes for a great society doesn’t it? ),
-Don’t murder! (Yeah, I
think I like that one!),
-We need to respect your neighbours enough not to go and have inappropriate sexual things
with their spouses or significant others. (We live in a big world and our neighbour is as close as the nearest computer. How
well do we actually respect that neighbours wife? We want people to respect our wife’s or husbands don’t
we? I think we know this one is true too!)
-Don’t steal! (That’s pretty self explanatory and
we probably agree with that!).
-Don’t lie! (This is one that is easier to screw up and some people
think it’s a good thing to do until someone lies to them…then they know it’s a valid guideline!).
-Finally, it says we must not want what others have in away that it eat’s us up inside because we desire it so much!
(That type of greed is counter productive and introduces strain in our lives).
These are really good guidelines, what do don’t you think?
Not rules since on this earth we have the freedom to reject this advise and carry on regardless don't we?
The consequences are ours to carry however!
Even this set of guidelines
I have discussed is fading in favour today! So Paul talks of the veil being ripped away like that paper
from a gift. Rule based living is ripped off!
The gift inside when we remove the rule based wrapping is Jesus’
Holy Spirit!
Once we take away the façade of our being
in control of our lives and instead let Jesus control it, our faces are not covered with a veil any more.
We see clearly and what is more, others see Jesus in our thoughts, actions and the way we speak! We start
to display the Lord's glory!
That’s great, but the gift our Father gives us is more precious
than that, it changes us from the inside out, slowly, with love! We start enjoying true life every day! We understand
how to use the guidelines to wring every ounce of enjoyment and fulfillment from each day.
In
simple terms we are being changed to become more like him so that we have more and more glory. The glory of God starts to
fill our life!
What is glory? It’s perhaps best used in modern
language when we think of a spectacular morning where the air is crisp, the sky is that sharp blue and everything beautiful,
flowering and fresh! That the day is glorious.
It is when a light seems
to almost come out of the world around us. Everything becomes more vivid and beautiful. Our minds fill with
an unspeakable joy! That’s glory! That’s what is available to us today!
And that glory comes from the Lord, who is the Holy Spirit.
Let's go enjoy it!

Stories that have truths in them…The story of the Lion and the Jackal!
When we are in difficult times and need to convey truth, when others would want to use our words
against us, when we would like to tell truth but not have those that would hurt us in some way understand, then we tell stories
with hidden truths.
Jesus told stories of this nature.
Here is one…
"A farmer went out to plant his seed. He scattered the seed on the ground.
Some fell on a path. Birds came and ate it up. Some seed fell on rocky places, where there wasn't much soil. The plants came
up quickly, because the soil wasn't deep. When the sun came up, it burned the plants. They dried up because they had no roots.
Other seed fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and crowded out the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It produced
a crop 100, 60 or 30 times more than what was planted. Those who have ears should listen."
Now we don’t often get to hear the meaning of these stories
because Jesus let’s those that have Holy Spirit in their life work it out for themselves under Holy Spirit’s guidance,
however in this particular case he gave the meaning as well. This is what it means…
"Listen!
Here is the meaning of the story of the farmer. People hear the message about the kingdom but do not understand it. Then the
evil one comes. He steals what was planted in their hearts. Those people are like the seed planted on a path. Others received
the seed that fell on rocky places. They are those who hear the message and at once receive it with joy. But they have no
roots. So they last only a short time. They quickly fall away from the faith when trouble or suffering comes because of the
message. Others received the seed that fell among the thorns. They are those who hear the message. But then the worries of
this life and the false promises of wealth crowd it out. They keep it from producing fruit. But still others received the
seed that fell on good soil. They are those who hear the message and understand it. They produce a crop 100, 60 or 30 times
more than the farmer planted."
So in a strange way, this parable (the story) is a story about listening to God’s
word which includes this story itself!
There is a reference to Jesus telling stories in the New Testament, that
refers back to psalms in the Old Testament, it is found in Matthew 13:35 (NIRV) and says
Jesus
spoke all these things to the crowd by using stories. He did not say anything to them without telling a story. So the words
spoken by the prophet came true. He had said,
"I will open my mouth and tell stories. I will speak about things that were hidden since the world was made."
—(Psalm 78:2)
Jesus was a story teller, so the telling of stories
must be important to us if God himself does this. J This reference is to a psalm that has a lot to say about story telling. We
probably don’t have time or space to go thorough it all today (but here is some of it)
Here are some references Ref 1, Ref 2, Ref 3
My people, listen to my teaching. Pay attention to what I say. I will open my mouth and tell stories. I will speak about things
that were hidden.
They happened a long time ago. We
have heard about them and we know them.
Our people who lived before us have told us about them. We won't hide them from our children. We will tell them to those who live after
us. We will tell them
about what the Lord has done that is worthy of praise. We will talk about his power and the wonderful things he has done. He gave laws to the people of Jacob. He gave Israel their law. He commanded our people who lived before
us
to teach his laws to their children. Then
those born later would know his laws.
Even their children yet to come would know them. And they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God. They would not forget
what he had done.
They would obey his commands. They
would not be like their people who lived before them. Those people were stubborn. They refused to obey God. Their hearts were not true to him. Their spirits were not faithful to him.
The
art of story telling with a purpose is important and we would do well to use it.
Learning the
skill enables us to reach people easily. Even if all we do is retell Jesus stories, we are doing good.
So today, I want to explain that a lion went into the bush to see the
animals and there was a jackal who wanted to subvert the lions words and make him appear to be a fool. The jackal even worked
up all the hyena’s who gathered in force to trick the lion and lay waiting to take him down. But, when the lion spoke
to his subjects he told them stories that the jackal and hyena’s couldn’t understand. The simpler animals could
understand because the stories were about how they lived their lives and so they could easily identify with the characters.
They loved the lion and appreciated these stories. The Jackal and hyena’s didn’t understand them and hated the
lion.
Then
the jackal and hyena’s managed to corner the lion, who allowed them to carry him off without a fight. The lion did this
so that the fight with the evil animals would not end up with the other animals getting hurt. The lion was showing that royalty
comes at a price. The price of care and love for the subjects to the extent that it can cost the royal person their life!
The jackal and hyena’s tried to kill the lion and thought
they had succeeded, but he came back from this planned death and is planning a tremendous deadly attack on the jackals’
and hyena’s when the power of a lions kingdom will be felt throughout the bush. The day that it is unleashed will be
a terrible day, but the lion is patient, wanting the other animals to understand his stories and be able to avoid that day.
That’s the message the lion wants to get to the animals, that he loves them and wants to protect them for all time.
The animals need to pass the stories around so that they all have a chance to be part of the lions plan.
Well, that’s my story for today.
Be blessed!
Matthew 13:35 I will open my mouth in parables;
I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. Psalms 77:2 I will open my mouth in parables:
I will utter dark sayings which have been from the beginning.
