What is Ash Wednesday? What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday a day that reminds us were not here forever, and challenges us to live the very best
everyday. – Unknown
Jesus enters Jerusalem! Gathering together the outcasts of Israel into the mighty army of
Christians that have changed and bettered our world! At least, from the perspective of the western world.
The day this happens in the church calendar is called Palm
Sunday and it is the last Sunday before Easter, the time when the Christian church celebrates Jesus dying and coming alive
again.
Palm Sunday is often
commemorated by waving of palms and using palms in the church service.
Ash Wednesday is linked to Palm Sunday as the palms are then burnt to ashes and the
ashes are used on the Ash Wednesday to mark each person who wants to be symbolically marked as a person who will give up something
to focus their mind on Jesus for the next six weeks.
This is a strange practice since six weeks involved encompass forty six days, although six weeks are forty-two
days, and Lent, the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter is supposedly in memory of the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness.
The reason forty six days are in place is that lent encompasses six Sundays so is a bit longer than six weeks.
During this time Christians follow some fast for 40 days,
fasting Monday to Saturday for the six weeks and Wednesday to Saturday in the preceding week. This makes 40 days.
So what about the ashes?
These are used to place a mark of the cross on each person’s
forehead or in some cases are sprinkled on their head during the Ash Wednesday get together.
At the time this is done things like “Repent, and believe
in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” may be said.
Ash is a sign of sorrow and knowing one is guilty of doing
selfish, nasty and ignorant things that displease God.
This 40 day period is meant to be a time of separation and prayer.
This year Easter is April 5. I guess the question
that Ash Wednesday asks is how we will prepare for that celebration? What will we do to prepare to celebrate the greatest
gift the world has been given?
